A PERIOD OF GROWTH
This has been a period of intense growth for Bridges; we are now teaching photography, technology and digital storytelling to youth in 15 Bridges sites. In the Pacific NW alone over 150 students will be joining Bridges - that is almost as many as participated in the Bridges program worldwide a year ago.
Who are we serving? Over 90% of our students are students of color and over 91% are low or very low income. Of our 15 sites, six serve indigenous students. Site by site, student by student we are making a difference - giving youth a voice, connecting them with their peers and creating world citizens. Take a look at some of the great work that our students are creating at www.bridgesweb.org/NewFiles/gallery.html

JOIN US IN GUATEMALA
for an unforgettable photography workshop. This is a unique chance to work creatively with young Mayan photographers while helping them to document their lives and communities through documentary storytelling. More information

INSIDE A BRIDGES WORKSHOP by Jessica McCoy
As a Bridges intern, I really didn’t know what to expect going into a weekend mentor’s workshop in Seattle. I’m a journalism student beginning my senior year at Ithaca College. I have some experience with digital cameras, Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro, a video editing program, so I wasn’t sure how much I would learn in a digital storytelling workshop. And honestly I was a bit skeptical about spending a nice sunny weekend indoors. But in the end, it turned out to be a great weekend and I learned even more than I had hoped to. Here’s what the weekend looked like for me: continue

NOTES FROM PHIL by Phil Borges
This summer we did back-to-back Mentors workshops in Ollantaytambo, Peru: it was the first time that we had a group of teens from the USA join us in a workshop. Four of the teens were in both workshops spending almost a month in Peru. The teens quickly bonded with the Peruvian students and many tears were shed when it was time to leave.

On the bus ride back to Cusco I asked our young Mentors what they considered to be the differences between them-selves and their new Peruvian friends. continue

"Tim-buk-tu and Kat-man-du — those were my two favorite words when I was a kid." Since then Audrey has been an avid world traveler who has joined Bridges to work with our students in India and Peru. Audrey has also become continue

THANK YOU ANNIE, CHERYL, LISA & JESSICA
Bridges was very lucky to have four interns working with us this summer. Annie Short, Western Washington University, helped us implement web-based marketing for our workshops. Lisa Tilson and Jessica McCoy, journalism students from the University of Kansas and Ithaca University, wrote a series of articles on Bridges. Cheryl Crow, a recent graduate of Vassar, wrote and researched grants. They were talented, productive and a lot of fun.

image MENTORS NEEDED
One of our newest sites, Madison Middle School in West Seattle, needs mentors to work with teens who have recently immigrated from countries such as Mexico, Ethiopia and Cambodia. And as always we can use help writing grants. More information

When you visit our website you will see that we have added a new feature on our home page. The most important piece of the Bridges program is our students. Collectively we are making a difference in the lives of over 400 young people, but often it takes knowing one student at a time to appreciate their talents and skills.
We are pleased to introduce this new feature with one of our most talented students, Tsering Topygal from the Tibetan Children’s Village in Dharamsala, India. continue
